Major Changes in INTRIGUE Version 2.0
═════ ═══════ ══ ════════ ═══════ ═══
Thanks to many of you out there, we have been made aware of several bugs
and annoying features of INTRIGUE Version 1.0. We've decided to make the
major step from Version 1.0 to Version 2.0 in order to take care of these
problems. Below, we've listed all the changes we've made. The last section
contains features we are strongly considering for the next version. Please
let us know of any features you would like to see added to INTRIGUE!
Fixes for Version 2.0
═════ ═══ ═══════ ═══
1) Both the Sysop program and the Term program are now included in
one file - INTSYS20.ZIP. This file contains the file INTTRM20.ZIP
that the sysop should post for his users to Download. The sysop
still needs both ZIP files.
2) Version 1.0 and Version 2.0 are NOT COMPATIBLE!!! We're sorry for
this inconvenience, but it had to be done sometime due to a major
bug that wouldn't allow people to run more than one scenario! See
the notes in USER.DOC and SYSOP.DOC for more details.
3) The file CONFIG.DAT is now unhidden. We were in some kind of delirious
state when we hid that file! There was no need to do so, and from
what we've heard, it's caused people problems. If you haven't installed
INTRIGUE before, ignore this change. If you have INTRIGUE installed now,
you'll want to use the UNHIDE.EXE program we've provided to unhide it.
Just type the command:
UNHIDE CONFIG.DAT
from your game directory.
4) Made INTBBS.EXE a little more compatible with those windows type programs
out there which insist on running their own ANSI everytime a sysop opens/
closes a window.
5) Fixed INTRIGUE so that when a sysop plays local (see SYSOP.DOC for
instructions on how to CORRECTLY do so), the program ignores all
communication calls.
6) Built the PROTOCOL message into INTBBS.EXE. For users of version 1.0,
you can remove the TYPE PROTOCOL.ANS line from your batch file...see
SYSOP.DOC.
7) Built a carrier detect routine into INTBBS.EXE. This routine checks
carrier every 5 seconds the door is open. If carrier is lost, the
program terminates, and the rest of the batch file is carried out. Good
BBS programs should then realize that carrier has been lost and recycle
to the Waiting for Callers menu. Watch carrier routines are no longer
necessary...most of those tend to REBOOT your machine...we feel this way
is better.
8) Removed the "Blank Screen" after the 2nd Intro screen in the Term. This
blank screen caused a lot of anxious moments for both users and sysops
alike. Now a blinking "Transferring files..." message appears at the
bottom of the second intro screen.
9) Fixed INSTALL.EXE to remove all *.msg and *.ord from game sub-directories.
10) Rewrote (hopefully for the better) both USER.DOC and SYSOP.DOC.
11) Fixed random number generator that randomly assigns players to countries.
12) Fixed the "Thanks for Playing INTRIGUE...." message.
13) Restored cursor upon exit from INTBBS.EXE (happy, Allen??)
14) Fixed bug that caused INTBBS.EXE to send incorrect data to Remote end.
Now players should have all pertinent information on the game they
selected on the BBS.
15) Fixed the bug in INTRIGUE.EXE that caused the same problem described in 14.
16) Fixed INSTALL.EXE so that non-registered users can re-install game 0 with
scenario 0.
17) Wrote an INTNODE.EXE file to allow sysops to run INTRIGUE on multi-node
BBS's.
18) Wrote a DESTALL.BAT file that allows sysops to (gasp!) remove all the
sub-directories for the 10 games.
19) Added various switches to both INTRIGUE and INTBBS to make it easier
to install the game with modem online, and allow the sysop to shell to
DOS and run either program without fouling up communications already in
progress.
20) Probably the most important fix: INTRIGUE now allows players to send/
receive mail, and send orders in games they have joined BEFORE THE GAME
HAS STARTED. This fix should allow players to confer with other players
before game-time.
21) Allow players to find out immediately (by sending them to the map) what
country they've drawn when they join a game.
22) Provided technical information on data files. This info is available in
SYSOP.DOC and will allow sysops a little more control over games. It also
provides file formats for those programmers out there who might like to
write utilities for INTRIGUE.
Improvements/Utilities Planned for INTRIGUE
════════════════════════════════════════════
1) Allow a player to remove himself from a game.
2) Write a "save" utility so that players can keep several games they're
involved with in their game directory and look at any of them in Local
mode.
3) Create an ANSI screen that lists players in real names in a certain game.
Currently, players are anonymous, but sysops will soon have the ability
to deem certain games on his BBS as "Players' names known".
4) Create the Pacific Theatre WWII scenario.
5) Create the USA Civil War scenario.
6) Create a utility program that allows people to design their own scenarios.
None of these are etched in stone, although it is very realistic that they
will be completed in the near future!
